Iran sentences two to death over Shiraz shrine attack

In February 2021, Iran sentenced two individuals to death in relation to the 2019 Shiraz shrine attack, which killed 19 people and injured dozens more. The attack, carried out by a group affiliated with the Islamic State, targeted a Shia Muslim shrine in the southwestern city of Shiraz. The two men sentenced to death were accused of providing material and logistical support to the attackers. The verdict was met with praise from Iranian officials, who vowed to continue their efforts to combat terrorism and maintain national security. However, human rights organizations have criticized the use of the death penalty in Iran, citing concerns about fair trials and due process.
