Afghanistan used to launch attacks on Pakistan: Defence minister

Pakistan's defense minister made the claim that armed groups are using Afghanistan's soil to launch attacks on Pakistan. The Taliban government in Kabul swiftly responded, calling the claim "incorrect" and "regrettable".

Khwaja Asif stated to a private news channel on Monday night, "We have spoken to the Afghanistan government, and we will keep saying that... their soil is being used for cross-border terrorism".

Remarks were made shortly after Prime Minister S H-E H B-A Z Sharif of Pakistan, General A S-I-M, the country's newly appointed military chief, and other high-ranking officials attended a meeting of the National Security Committee (NSC) in Islamabad, the capital.

Following the NSC meeting, the government issued a statement stating that terrorist attacks "will be dealt with full force of the state" and that "no country will be allowed to provide sanctuaries"

Although the NSC statement did not mention any nations, it made what appeared to be a reference to Afghanistan, whose government denies the allegations, calling them "provocative and baseless"

Provocative Assertions

In response to the two statements, Z-A B-I H L-A H M U J-A H-I D, a spokesman for the Taliban government in Afghanistan, stated on Tuesday that "the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan wants good relations with all its neighboring countries, including Pakistan," referring to the name that the Taliban has given the country. These assertions are provocative.

The Islamic Emirate is doing everything in its power to ensure that Afghanistan's territory is not used against Pakistan or any other nation. We are committed to achieving this objective, but it is also the Pakistani side's responsibility to try to control the situation and refrain from making baseless and provocative claims, as such statements and mistrust are not in either side's best interests.

Following a string of recent attacks by T-E H R-I K-E T-A L-I B-A N Pakistan (TTP), an armed group also known as Pakistani Taliban due to its ideological kinship with the Afghan Taliban, officials from Pakistan and Afghanistan exchanged words.

For more than a decade, the TTP has been fighting against Pakistan's government. The group wants to stop the merger of Pakistan's tribal areas with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, release its members who have been detained by the government, and impose their hard-line interpretation of Islamic law.

Pakistan's monitoring agencies recorded more than 150 TTP attacks that killed dozens of people across the country in 2022 alone. Authorities are concerned that the TTP's resurgence has been aided by the Taliban's rise in Afghanistan.

The armed group ordered its fighters to carry out attacks across the country and unilaterally ended a ceasefire agreement with the Pakistani government that had been mediated by the Afghan Taliban in November.

Asif mentioned the Doha agreement that the Taliban and the United States signed in February 2020 to make it easier for foreign forces to leave Afghanistan in his interview with the news channel.

The Taliban pledged to prevent any armed group from using Afghanistan to carry out attacks against other nations as part of the agreement. In August 2021, the Afghan Taliban seized control of Kabul as US and NATO troops began their departure

Peace is non-negotiable

Pakistan's Prime Minister Sharif stated in a tweet on Tuesday that the country will adopt a zero-tolerance policy for terrorists challenging its writ. Peace is non-negotiable. A counterterrorism center in the B-A N U district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which is bordered by Afghanistan, was taken hostage by TTP fighters last month after they defeated and overpowered Pakistani security personnel.

If the Taliban government fails to hand over members of the armed group to Pakistan, Pakistan's interior minister, Rana Sanaullah, said the country is considering launching attacks on TTP hideouts in Afghanistan. It was stated in a statement, "We are ready to defend the territorial integrity and independence of our homeland, as always, and it is noteworthy that we have the best experience of anyone in defending and protecting our country"
