Previously unknown monumental temple discovered near the Tempio Grande in Vulci
Summary Of University Of Freiburg
One of the largest known Etruscan sacred buildings has been found by archaeologists. The strata of the temple provide insight into the development of one of the most important Etruscan cities over the course of more than 1000 years. The newly discovered temple was constructed around the same time as the nearby Tempo Grande, and is roughly the same size and on a similar alignment. This extraordinary discovery of monumental buildings duplicated in an Etruscan city is rare
In the ancient city of 'V u l c i', which is located in the Italian region of 'L a t i u m', an interdisciplinary team led by archaeologists Dr. Mariachi Ara Frances Chin of the University of Freiburg and Paul P. 'P AS I E K A' of the University of Mainz has discovered a previously unknown Etruscan temple. The 45-by-35-meter structure is west of the sacred Tempo Grande, which was discovered during excavations in the 1950s. The researchers were able to date the construction of the temple toward the end of the sixth or the beginning of the fifth century BCE after conducting an initial examination of the objects found in the northeast corner of the temple and the strata of the foundation
According to Frances Chin, "the new temple was built about the same time as the neighboring Tempo Grande and is roughly the same size and on a similar alignment." Pasieka adds, "This extraordinary finding of monumental buildings duplicated in an Etruscan city is rare." While working on the VU L CI Cityscape project, which began in 2020 and aimed to investigate the settlement strategies and urbanistic structures of VU L CI, the team came across the temple. Vulcan was one of the Etruscan Federation's twelve cities and one of Italy's most important urban centers in pre-Roman times
New discoveries about city design and development
New insights into the planning and development of cities P A S I E K A explains, "We studied the entire northern area of VU L CI, which is 22.5 hectares, using geophysical prospecting and ground-penetrating radar". "We are now better able to comprehend the dynamics of settlement and the road system, in addition to identifying various functional areas in the city, thanks to the discovery of remains from the city's beginnings that were previously overlooked in VU L CI". The analysts had the option in 2021 to uncover the principal segments of the wall, made of strong tuff. According to Frances Chin, "our understanding of the appearance and organization of Etruscan cities has been limited up until this point". One of the most important Etruscan cities' development over a thousand years can be traced back to the temple's intact strata.
Throughout the next few years, the researchers need to concentrate on the various periods of purpose and the exact engineering appearance of the sanctuary in more profundity, to study the religion of the Etruscans, the social designs in VU L CI, and what the existences of the city's occupants were truly similar to
