Indonesia earthquake: Over 160 dead and hundreds injured as tremor strikes island of Java
After an earthquake struck Indonesia's main island of Java on Monday, destroying buildings and sending people scrambling for safety, more than 160 people were killed and hundreds were injured.
Aftershocks have struck, and rescue workers have been attempting to reach survivors trapped beneath the debris. Earlier, the Disaster Mitigation Agency (B N P B) of Indonesia stated that 62 people had died and that at least 25 people were thought to be trapped beneath collapsed buildings.
Later, Governor R ID W-A N K-A M I L of West Java said that at least 162 people had died.
Additionally, the earthquake has caused over 13,000 people to be displaced, according to local media.
The magnitude 5.6 earthquake was located at a depth of 10 kilometers in the C I-A N J U R region of the West Java province, according to the US Geological Survey. According to the Bureau of Meteorology and Geophysics (B M K G), there is no possibility of a tsunami.
The quake was felt strongly in Jakarta and the surrounding area, which is about 75 kilometers south of C I-A N J U R.
The head of the city administration in C-I-A N J U R, West Java, H E R M-A N, previously informed the news channel Metro TV that approximately 700 people had been injured.
He went on to say that one city hospital was treating "at least 300" patients. He stated, "Most have broken bones from being trapped in the building debris".

According to B N P B chief Suharyanto, the damaged structures included a hospital, an Islamic boarding school, and other public facilities.
The agency stated that additional information regarding the number of casualties and damage was still being gathered.
