Most physicists agree that the universe began with the Big Bang. In a brief burst of intense heat and light, everything in the universe was created. Nonetheless, is it possible that something existed before the Big Bang? In the end, nothing might have shaped something, right? It turns out that the response is somewhat interesting. 


According to Live Science, researchers currently have no idea what the universe looked like one second prior to the massive explosion. It is essential to know how physicists believe the universe will end before we can determine what occurred prior to its beginning. The Big Crunch is one theory for how our universe will end. According to this theory, which is based on Einstein's Theory of General Relativity, the current expansion of our universe will eventually stop. According to the universe today, the universe will collapse into itself as a result of this. This will result in the collision of all matter, which will be essentially the opposite of the Big Bang. 


Even though the Big Crunch is not the only theory about how the universe will end, it might be the key to understanding what might have happened before the Big Bang. According to Space com, some scientists have hypothesized that, in the event of the Big Crunch, all the matter being smashed into a single location could generate sufficient energy to initiate a second Big Bang, relaunching the universe from scratch. We are in the second, third, fourth, or even millionth generation of our universe, so if the Big Crunch could happen in the future, who is to say that one hasn't already occurred? What if the universe simply oscillates between the next Big Bang and the next Big Crunch on a regular basis?


THE MULTIVERSE THEORY MAY PROVIDE ALTERNATIVE ANSWERS

The theory that we alternate between crunches and bangs is not the only one that could explain what happened before the Big Bang. For instance, theoretical physicist Sean Carroll and his colleague Jennifer Chen at the California Institute of Technology have devised their own theory for what might have occurred prior to our universe. According to Cornell University, their 2004 paper on the subject suggested that a fragment of space-time splitting from a parent universe could have created our universe. 


Carroll says that this theory works in the same way that radioactive particles decay. In the same way that a radioactive particle releases alpha and beta particles as it decays, a parent universe may release big bangs rather than particles to create new universes. He believes that parallel universes could continue to form forever as a result of this process. While Carroll and Chen's research has contributed to understanding how the multiverse might actually exist, others have previously played with the idea that we live in a multiverse
