How GoPro for Beetles Robotic Camera Backpack Developed for Insects and Tiny Robots Works

 


The main character in the movie "Ant-Man" can travel and shrink in size by flying on the back of an insect. Now, researchers at the University of Washington have made a small wireless steerable camera that can also ride on an insect, giving everyone a chance to see the world through the eyes of Ant-Man. 


The camera is mounted on a mechanical arm that can pivot 60 degrees and sends video to a smartphone at 1 to 5 frames per second. With this, a viewer can track a moving object or take a high-resolution panoramic picture with little effort. The team mounted this system on top of live beetles and insect-sized robots to demonstrate its adaptability. It weighs about 250 milligrams, or one-tenth of a playing card.

S H Y A M Go L A K O T A, senior author and UW associate professor in the Paul G Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering, stated, We have created a low-power, low-weight, wireless camera system that can capture a first-person view of what’s happening from an actual live insect or create vision for small robots. Despite its significance for communication and navigation, vision at such a small scale is extremely challenging. Wireless vision for small robots or insects had never been possible before our work


Normal little cameras, for example, those utilized in cell phones, utilize a great deal of ability to catch wide-point, high-goal photographs, and that doesn't work at the bug scale. Even though the cameras themselves are small, the batteries they need to work make the system too big and heavy for insects or robots of insect size to carry around. Therefore, the team learned from biology. 


S A W Y E R F U L E R, a co-author and U W assistant professor of mechanical engineering, stated, "Like cameras, animals' vision requires a lot of power". Compared to larger animals like humans, flies only use 10 to 20% of their resting energy to power their brains, the majority of which is spent processing visual information. To assist with reducing the expense, a few flies have a little, high-goal district of their compound eyes. In order to steer where they want to see more clearly, such as when they are pursuing prey or a mate, they turn their heads. Having high resolution across their entire visual field saves power


Using a mechanical arm, the robotic arm can sweep across a field of view. Framework is controlled by means of Bluetooth from up to 120 meters away through a cell phone


In addition, they created the smallest terrestrially powered autonomous robot with wireless vision in the world. The tiny robot moves by using vibrations and uses about the same amount of power as low-powered Bluetooth radios


Although the researchers acknowledge that this technology comes with a new set of privacy risks, they are enthusiastic about the potential for lightweight and low-power mobile cameras. 


Go L A K O T A stated, "As researchers, we strongly believe that it is really important to put things in the public domain, so people are aware of the risks and can begin coming up with solutions to address them". 


According to the researchers, potential uses could include studying novel environments and biology. The team hopes that future versions of the camera won't need as much power, won't need batteries, and might even be powered by solar energy.
